Enjoying wine alongside pizza is a time-old classic. And did you know that the depth of our eco-flat bottles just so happens to be roughly the depth of a takeaway pizza box? This got us thinking, wouldn’t it be great if restaurants or food delivery companies could pack a bottle of wine into the pizza box itself, so that their customers could benefit from a simple way to enhance their at-home dining experience.  

We approached our friends at cardboard packaging giant DS Smith and after many variations later (and slices of pizza, for market research of course), our wine & dine pizza delivery prototype box was born. It includes well thought-through design features like a dock to prevent the bottle from sliding into the pizza, and placing the bottle where carriers naturally grip the box to support the weight of the wine.

Made from 100% recycled PET, eco-flat bottles are lightweight and shatterproof. Compared to heavy, fragile and cumbersome glass bottles, our bottles are therefore much more functional and convenient for delivery scooters to transport. Restaurants could also choose which wines they offer with each pizza, for a tailored, perfectly paired dining experience. And because of the material, the bottles can chill in the fridge at home much faster than glass ones.

With the explosion in the food delivery market, especially during the pandemic, adding alcohol to a takeaway or delivery order remains a relatively untapped but highly attractive prospect. After all, beverages like wine are one of the most profitable areas of a restaurant. In the USA for instance, 70% of Gen Z and 62% of Millennials said the ability to add alcohol to a takeout or delivery order is a determining factor in their restaurant decisions, according to a report from the National Restaurant Association.
