Two very special KLM flights will take off from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol on Saturday 7 May. Flight KL0675 to Edmonton, Canada, and flight KL1713 to Porto, Portugal, have undergone the widest possible array of sustainability measures. Initiated by KLM employees, the Sustainable Flight Challenge will see sixteen SkyTeam Airline Alliance members competing with a view to sharing insight and experience on sustainability, thereby accelerating the drive towards greater sustainability throughout the airline industry. Packamama, the multi award-winning start-up offering packaging protecting Mother Earth, is one of those companies involved in the Challenge.
Packamama has provided their eco-flat wine bottles to support KLM’s efforts to achieve the most sustainable flight possible. 87% lighter and 40% spatially smaller, Packamama’s climate-friendly bottles are ideally suited for use in the cabin, where space is at a premium and weight savings are sought after to help reduce fuel consumption. Made from 100% recycled PET, their bottles fulfil the sustainability brief through saving weight and energy to lower carbon emissions in production and transport compared to glass bottles. Not only are they made from pre-existing material to limit creation of new plastic, but they additionally contribute to circular models through being fully, easily and widely recyclable after use.
The bottle’s benefits do not stop at the environment either – they are also great for people. The format means passengers can enjoy a restaurant-like experience with wines poured from a bottle, while the space savings mean fewer trips to the galley to replenish, thanks to more bottles being able to fit in a trolley. Organic wines were selected to further enhance the sustainability focus.

René de Groot, COO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, said, “This spirit of cooperation makes greater sustainability possible and feasible.”
Amelia Dales, Commercial Director at Packamama, said, “We are thrilled to be supporting KLM and City Hopper. The Sustainable Flight Challenge shows that the airline industry is taking meaningful, necessary steps to come together and explore new, innovative ways to reduce their carbon footprint. Our climate-friendly bottles demonstrate that when it comes to onboard hospitality, experience and enjoyment of wine can go hand-in-hand with sustainability.”
