Packamama Honoured as Finalists in Premier’s Sustainability Awards 2023 for Circular Economy Innovation

Packamama, a leader in sustainable packaging, has been recognised as a finalist in the Community Champion subcategory for Circular Economy Innovation at the prestigious Premier’s Sustainability Awards 2023. Presented by Sustainability Victoria, the awards celebrate the outstanding contributions of organizations and individuals driving sustainability initiatives across Victoria. This finalist recognition highlights Packamama’s significant contribution to advancing circular economy initiatives in the State.

Circular Economy Innovation was one of the six categories featured in the Premier’s Sustainability Awards, each aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Within this category, Packamama was named a finalist in the Community Champion subcategory, emphasizing the vital role of individuals and small organizations in driving circular economy initiatives and fostering sustainability.

Packamama’s eco-flat wine bottles, made from 100% Australian recycled PET, have earned them a well-deserved spot among the finalists. The innovative design not only contributes to a circular economy but also addresses the environmental impact of traditional round glass bottles in the wine industry. Packamama’s achievement in reaching the finals recognises their dedication to creating a more sustainable future for the Australian wine industry.

Matt Genever, Sustainability Victoria’s Interim CEO, commended the finalists, stating, “These Industry Leaders and Community Champions are leading the way in sustainability and making significant contributions to Victoria’s circular economy transformation and a net zero-emissions future.”

The eco-flat wine bottles are a testament to Packamama’s commitment to sustainable practices and the circular economy. By utilising recycled PET, these flat-pack bottles reduce the carbon footprint associated with traditional packaging. Their space-saving design allows for more efficient transportation, cutting down on fuel consumption. Additionally, the use of pre-existing materials and a far lighter weight contribute to an impressive 84% reduction in energy usage.

Hannah Arkell from Packamama and Mia Lloyd and James Kelly from Coles Liquor attended the Premier’s Sustainability Awards Ceremony, held on November 23, 2023, at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Federation Square. This event marked the culmination of this year’s competition and brought together leaders, innovators, and advocates committed to advancing sustainability across various categories.

The six award categories encompass: 1) Circular Economy Innovation; 2) Future Energy; 3) Waste and Recycling Solutions; 4) Healthy and Fair Society; 5) Thriving Environment; 6) Sustainable Places.

Packamama’s entry summary highlights their mission to future-proof the wine industry in the face of climate change. Working in collaboration with industry leaders such as Accolade Wines, Taylors Wines, and Coles Liquor, Packamama’s flat wine bottles are produced and filled in Victoria, further contributing to the State’s sustainable business landscape.

As Packamama continues to make strides in sustainable packaging, their acknowledgement as a finalist in the Premier’s Sustainability Awards 2023 reinforces their position as a key player in shaping the future of eco-friendly practices in the Australian wine industry.
